Painting a kitchen island is a big project, but the final result will be worth it. Before you begin painting, you‵ll need to remove all the hardware from the cabinets on your island. Store the hardware you remove from each drawer or cabinet in a separate plastic bag and label them to speed things up when it comes time to reassemble everything. This will also prevent you from losing any important nails or screws.
After you´ve removed the hardware, wipe and clean the cabinets to remove any grease, dust or other grime. Once you`ve finished wiping down the cabinets, sand them lightly to create a slightly roughened surface for your paint to stick to. You`ll then want to remove all the drawers and drawer fronts from the island. Use masking paper to cover the interior, floor and countertop. Next you'll want to caulk any seams between the panels and doorframes; fill any holes with wood filler. Let the wood filler dry, then sand it until it is flush with the cabinet´s surface. Wipe the cabinetry clean once again to remove any traces of dust.
Freestanding kitchen islands come with a variety of options. Many of them include wheels, like a butcher`s or utility cart. These islands come in a number of styles, including carts with wooden butcher block tops and ones made completely from stainless steel.
