After determining the size and shape your kitchen can accommodate, choose a rolling kitchen island that best fits the needs of your space. For instance, islands can offer extra storage and display space or dedicated countertop space for tasks such as chopping or kneading. Kitchen islands on wheels are also great for entertaining; transport everything from barware or serving platters indoors or out, or from the kitchen to the dining room with little hassle—just follow the party.
After you´ve removed the hardware, wipe and clean the cabinets to remove any grease, dust or other grime. Once you`ve finished wiping down the cabinets, sand them lightly to create a slightly roughened surface for your paint to stick to. You`ll then want to remove all the drawers and drawer fronts from the island. Use masking paper to cover the interior, floor and countertop. Next you'll want to caulk any seams between the panels and doorframes; fill any holes with wood filler. Let the wood filler dry, then sand it until it is flush with the cabinet´s surface. Wipe the cabinetry clean once again to remove any traces of dust.
Other rustic kitchen island designs include wood with an antique or weathered look that adds a farm-to-table feel to the room. Freestanding kitchen islands with seating can be made from simple dark wood materials with stools placed on either side for family-style eating; this style works especially well in a rustic kitchen design.
